At Ojovolador we are clear: the sky above the cliff has no owner.

Long before concrete colonised the clifftop between Son Verí Nou and Cala Blava, before the infinity pools and the picture windows overlooking the Bay of Palma, the sea wind was already striking that limestone wall. And there, riding pure, clean dynamic lift, unpowered wings were already floating.

Today, that same relief has become yet another stage on which property privilege seeks to privatise even the rising air.

The paradox of the seagull and the paraglider

The recurring complaint borders on the aeronautically absurd: residents annoyed because a paraglider passes a few metres from the edge of the coast. It is worth reminding them of the most basic physics of ridge soaring: an unpowered aircraft does not stay up on a whim or out of a desire to peek into a garden; it stays up because the sea air is forced to rise over the cliff face. Move away from the compression zone and you end up in the water; push too far in and you enter the lee side.

The pilot is not after anyone’s privacy. With both hands on the brakes, feeling the internal pressure of the profile, reading the tension in the lines and anticipating the path ahead, the last thing on their mind is what brand of towel has been left by the pool.

What comes next in the complaints to the Harbour Master, the Coastal Authority and AESA? Demanding a restraining order against seagulls for violating the terrace’s visual “easement”? Nature flies where the wind blows, and free flight does exactly the same.

Paragliding in Son Verí: the majority who watch versus the minority who litigate

You only need to walk along the Son Verí promenade on a day with a steady sea breeze to see the reality on the ground. Dozens of walkers, families and local residents stop, fascinated by the silent spectacle of paragliders suspended against the Balearic sunset. For the vast majority, paragliding is not a nuisance but an added value to the landscape: fabric, wind and sea in perfect harmony.

The conflict arises, invariably, when a tiny handful of owners with a well-stocked contact list and a direct line to certain newsrooms decide that their square metre of plot includes sovereignty over the surrounding airspace. They pull strings, write alarmist complaints and feed biased headlines to turn a noble, eco-friendly sport into a public-order problem.

That is what we have seen with TV3’s recent report on flying in the area. César Canudas, a sport pilot living in Mallorca who is leading the defence of paraglider pilots’ rights in this dispute, has responded with a reply on Instagram that we recommend watching.

It is ironic that in a country like Spain — an undisputed reference and a world power in paragliding and paramotoring, home to world champions and a pioneering free-flight industry — there are attempts to criminalise one of the most respectful ways of interacting with the natural environment. It is not the first time: we already saw it with the unfounded accusations about Egyptian vultures and paragliders.

Technical and legal framework: the facts versus alarmism

Airspace sovereignty: town councils and residents’ associations have no powers over air navigation. Airspace regulation is a matter for the State, through the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA) and the Standardised European Rules of the Air (SERA). The air admits no cadastral boundaries or private easements.

Public maritime-terrestrial domain (DPMT): cliffs and coastal strips are public-use assets intended for the common enjoyment of all citizens, not private extensions of the neighbouring properties.

Zero noise and environmental footprint: a paraglider is an unpowered free-flight aircraft. It produces no polluting emissions and no decibels; the only sound in the air is the aerodynamic friction of the relative wind against the top surface and the lines.

The physics of ridge soaring: flying close to the terrain is inherent to dynamic soaring, to stay within the band of laminar lift generated by the relief. It is neither reckless behaviour nor a deliberate invasion of privacy.

Piloting workload: at low altitude and in cliff-soaring conditions, 100% of the pilot’s attention is absorbed by airspeed, pitch and roll control, and separation from other traffic and the terrain. In active piloting, visual contact with the inside of homes simply does not happen.

The way forward: coexistence is not achieved through disproportionate bans, but through local self-regulation agreements: clearly defined launch areas, corridors that keep pilots out towards the sea, and orderly parking on the ground.

Stop calling the Seprona and try taking off

Airspace has no gates, and the coast admits no invisible fences in the sky. The coastline is public domain, and the air above the sea belongs to everyone.

To those who spend so many afternoons drafting municipal complaints and trying to curb the freedom of flight, Ojovolador offers a constructive suggestion: set aside the resentment, put away the lawyer’s phone number and come up to launch. Bring a chair, watch with an open mind or, better still, hook into a tandem to understand what really happens on the other side of the trailing edge.

Perhaps, feeling on their face the same breeze that holds the wings up, they will finally understand that beauty cannot be locked inside a title deed.

Final thoughts: respect and coexistence

Let us be clear, so that nobody reads this article as a declaration of war: this is about respect and coexistence. The sky belongs to everyone, but there are also neighbours on the ground, and both realities are perfectly compatible.

If a paraglider pilot occasionally flies closer to a house than is desirable, that is an isolated case the community itself must correct through training, good judgement and self-regulation. Likewise, if a property owner, instead of talking, devotes themselves to filing complaints and straining coexistence, that is also an exception. Neither represents the majority.

That is why, far from bans and inflammatory headlines, we believe the way forward is communication: pilots, clubs and residents sitting down together, understanding each other’s needs and agreeing on simple rules to share the cliff in a friendly way. In Son Verí there is room for pools, walkers, seagulls and paragliders.

Opinion · Ojovolador editorial.
