I used to skydive, but the part that thrilled me was not the free-fall, but the glide under a parachute. Then I saw one paramotor fly over and then I decided to go with it. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11384\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\"\/><figcaption> Equipment electronics laid out for final check and battery change <br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Ever since I learned to fly PPG, I have always enjoyed long XC flights and to push myself to see how far I can go. Some years ago, I had an idea, to push it further than anyone has ever done before. So, I took my goal to beat the current world record \u2013 1105 km. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose Australia for the record attempt due to its more favourable climate, and fewer restrictions in airspace.<br> Years of testing, training, improving my setup have led me to this moment.  <strong>  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything\nwas set for the record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11386\" width=\"270\" height=\"405\"\/><figcaption>Engine and frame setup with reserve mounted on the swingarm<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>  As equipment I had: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>-Mac Para Paradox 27m wing<br>-HPR225 engine on a Power2Fly RS frame<br>-Mac Para Aegis 63 reserve \u2013 I choose the large reserve by weight during the take-off<br> -Flytec Element Track logger<br> -2X Amod loggers<br> -Garmin Oregon 300 and Oregon -600 GPS navigation devices\/loggers<br> -1.5l of water<br> -Radios<br> -Spot Gen3 personal tracker<br>-Bridal knife<br> -Garmin Vrib Ultra 30 Camera<br> -2X Xiaomi Mi power banks to power all devices<br>-Mac Para front container to hold all electronic equipment.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11388\" width=\"270\" height=\"461\"\/><figcaption>Testing the hang point with different fuel quantities in different tanks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The hardest\npart was to get the hang point just right so I would be hanging correctly with\nboth tanks full (front and back), Front tank empty, main tank full and both\ntanks empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After\nsucceeding in that, next challenge was to set up front fuel tank for take-off.\nI needed it to be high enough so it would not compromise my running and block\nmy knees. Playing around a little bit, I managed to succeed with that and jog\naround the airfield with full tanks and without the wing to support me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided\nto go with main tank almost full (17 litres in it) and front tank to carry\nround 55 litres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not\nwant to fill the main tank completely; because of the fuel delivery system I\nneeded the tank to be aired both ways and didn\u2019t want to overspill during the\ntake-off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11390\" width=\"380\" height=\"268\"\/><figcaption>Fuel tank in the flatbed of a truck right before attaching to the unit <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The front tank was put into a protective bag, that also made it easier to attach it to the unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the\nmorning I was going to take off, the winds started gathering force, so it was\ngood to set everything up at sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nquick-link fuel line made it possible to set everything else up before\nattaching the front tank and that made getting up and moving to place a bit\neasier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-facebook wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-facebook\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/es_ES\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v3.2\"><\/script><div class=\"fb-video\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lennusport\/videos\/843997422626833\/\" data-width=\"696\"><blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lennusport\/videos\/843997422626833\/\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lennusport\/videos\/843997422626833\/\">Maailmarekordi lend motovarjuga jalgadelt &#8211; 15 tundi, 1132km<\/a><p>ELF on esitanud FAI-sse meie piloodilt Lauri Kadakas maailmarekordi taotluse. Jalgadelt starditava motovarjuga (klass RPF1T) on kehtiv rekord pikima lennu valdkonnas tehtud 2007. aastal, hispaania piloodi Roman Morillas Salmeroni poolt \u2013 1105,0 km. Lauril oli siis n\u00fc\u00fcd 1132,7 km. Allpool tema enda lugu sellest lennust, mis kestis 15 tundi. Pikki lende ka edaspidiseks!&#8212;9.03 hommikul, p\u00e4ikeset\u00f5usul startisin paramootoriga maailmarekordi lennule. Algne plaan oli lennata 1200km sirgjoones. Kaasa v\u00f5tsin natuke \u00fcle 70 liitri k\u00fctust &#8211; ees olevas lisa k\u00fctusepaagis oli 55 ja p\u00f5hipaagis 17 liitrit. Lisaks oli mituk\u00fcmmend kilo elektroonikat, lisavarustust, varuvarju jne. Samuti v\u00f5tsin kaasa 1,5l vett joogiks. Kogu kaal \u00f5hkut\u00f5usul oli natuke \u00fcle 100kg varustust seljas. \u00d5nneks oli just tormipilv l\u00e4henemas ja see andis selle v\u00e4ikese lisatuule mis oli vajalik sujuvaks \u00f5hkut\u00f5usuks. Puhangud tegid kogu protsessi natuke keerulisemaks, kuid peagi olid jalad maast lahti. Varustus oli natuke paigast nihkunud, nii et peale esmast k\u00f5rguse kogumist panin masina p\u00f6\u00f6retele, mis hoidsid k\u00f5rgust ja hakkasin asju paika s\u00e4ttima. m\u00f5ned minutid hiljem j\u00e4tkasin ronimist kiirusega ca 0.4 m\/s. Antud ronimiskiirus sai valitud, kuna nendel p\u00f6\u00f6retel saavutasin parima v\u00f5imaliku tasakaalu mootori koormuse (\u00fclekuumenemisoht), k\u00fcttekulu ja vajaliku k\u00f5rgusekogumise juures. J\u00e4rgmised paar tundi j\u00e4tkasin ronimist kuni saavutasin oma soovitud lennuk\u00f5rguse &#8211; 2000 ja 3000 meetri vahel. See k\u00f5rgus andis v\u00f5imaluse v\u00e4ltida tugevaid termikaid ja turbulentsi. 2 tundi lendu ja k\u00fctusetuli l\u00e4ks p\u00f5lema, mis t\u00e4histas punkti, kus tuli hakata k\u00fctust esimesest paagist peapaaki \u00fcle kandma. S\u00fcsteem oli ehitatud nii, et peale paari pumpamist peaks k\u00fctus ise voolama hakkama. Seda kahjuks ei juhtund ja kogu lennu v\u00e4ltel k\u00fctuse \u00fclekanne (k\u00f5ik see 55 liitrit siis) toimuski k\u00e4sipumba (pirni) abil&#8230; Aga see on v\u00e4ike hind mida maksta sellise lennu puhul. Kui kell hakkas 10 saama, hakkasid termikad j\u00f5udu koguma ja pidevalt tuli kompenseerida vajumist ja k\u00f5rguse kogumist ja korrigeerida suunda vastavalt marsruudile. Samuti tuli hakata man\u00f6\u00f6verdama \u00fcmber tekkinud \u00fcksikute r\u00fcnkpilvede, mis kogusid k\u00f5rgust muljetavaldava kiirusega. Lendasin k\u00f5rgemal clodbasest kondenseerumispunktist, aga termikad raputasid korralikult. Vari v\u00f5ttis m\u00f5ned v\u00e4iksed osalised varingud tiivaotstes &#8211; kuid mitte midagi murettekitavat. Lend m\u00f6\u00f6dus pidevalt suunda korrigeerides, k\u00fctust pumbates, varustust kontrollides ja lihtsalt \u00fcritasin hoida ennast tegevuses ja m\u00f5tet t\u00f6\u00f6s. Esimene k\u00fctusepaak sai t\u00fchjaks kusagil tund aega enne planeeritud aega. Kuna kaotasin paaris kohas taganttuule, kompenseerisin kiirust trimmeritega \u00ac\u2013 aga see t\u00e4hendas ka suuremat k\u00fcttekulu. Peale viimast k\u00fctuse \u00fclekannet arvasin, et ei j\u00f5ua sihtm\u00e4rgini. J\u00e4tkasin sellegipoolest lendu ja viimasel 2 tunnil sain kiirust juurde puhangutest, mis oli tekitatud 300km kaugusel moodustunud ts\u00fcklonist. Viimase tunni lendasin v\u00f5imalikult l\u00e4hedal autoteele, kuna ootasin mootori v\u00e4ljasuremist k\u00fctuse l\u00f5ppemise t\u00f5ttu. Vahetult peale kehtiva rekordi \u00fcletamist suri mootor v\u00e4lja. \u00dcritasin k\u00fctust veel pumbata paagist karburaatorisse ja mootorit k\u00e4ivitada, kuid see ei andnud tulemust. K\u00fctus oli lihtsalt otsa saanud. Tol hetkel olin ikka \u00fcle 1000m \u00fcle maapinna ja otsustasin tee peale j\u00f5udmise asemel kogu olemasoleva k\u00f5rguse edasi distantsiks panna. Nii liuglesin 15km edasi ja maandusin p\u00f5\u00f5sastikus umbes  1,5km teest. Mul v\u00f5ttis \u00fcle 2 tunni sealt varustusega v\u00e4ljasaamine (ligi 50kg varustust seljas 35C temperatuuriga ja l\u00e4bi p\u00f5\u00f5sastiku). Kokku tuli 1132.7km sirgjoones ja \u00fcle 1200km \u00f5hus. Kehtiv rekord on 1105km sirgjoones. Varustus mida kasutasin oli. I got the\nwing up, but while turning I managed to twist my ankle a bit and tripped. Not a\nbig problem. I had to take everything off and, in a few minutes, I was set up again\nand ready for second attempt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since winds\nweren\u2019t that strong, I decided to go for a forward launch <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-start02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11402\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The gusts\nmade it a bit difficult making the wing dance above my head a bit but, in\ngeneral, that was not a problem. The impressive lift of my Paradox kicked in as\nsoon as I started moving, helping me in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Few moments\nlater, I was in the air. It was a hard launch, but I had made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next hours\npassed slowly climbing. I had leaned out engine so much for the cruising\naltitude that I could not use full climb in the beginning before I reached\naround 2500ft (760 metres) above ground. Also, I could not had done it because\nof the clouds at take-off point and up to 50 km further along the route were at\n3000-5000ft (900-1500 metres).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-start01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11400\" width=\"260\" height=\"325\"\/><figcaption>Airborne!<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I kept climbing slowly until I reached my designated cruise altitude few hours into flight \u2013 between 7000ft and 9000 ft (2100-2700m). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it was\ntime to do the first fuel transfer from the front tank to the main one, I had a\nsmall failure in planned fuel delivery. It was planned that after a few pumps,\nthe fuel would start flowing by gravity \u2013 the front tank was higher than main.\nThis didn\u2019t work, so during the entire flight, all the fuel was transferred\nmanually with a primer bulb. All the 55 lt I had in there. Just squeezing that\npump with one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather\nwas nice, sky fairly clear with some cumulus clouds starting to form. Even above\nthe cloud base, already around 10am, I started feeling the thermic activity and\nit was tossing me around a bit. But nothing too serious to be worried of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-05.jpg 650w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-05-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption> First meters in the air after  the hard take-off <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After\npassing Mount Isa, there were Cumulus clouds towering and that meant I needed\nto fly a bit \u201cslow slalom\u201d to pass those, because there was no point or even a\nway to climb over those towers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was\nalso around the point that I had transferred last drop of fuel from front tank\nto main tank. I had used more fuel than I anticipated since I had to compensate\nthe loss of tailwind with trimmers for a few hours, so as not to stretch the\nflight time. At this point I was thinking \u2013 I\u2019m not going to make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After\npassing the clouds, I started getting gusty air and impressive tailwinds\npowered by an electric storm forming few hundred km away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\nallowed me to go trims-in and still do over 100 km\/h easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right\naround the current world record mark, I ran out of fuel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-06.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-06.jpg 650w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-06-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><figcaption>   Forming \u201ctowers\u201d in front of me<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I was still\n4500ft (1370m) AGL, so instead of heading for the road, I decided to push\nforward as far as I could. Thus, meaning I\u2019m landing in the bush. The\nimpressive glide of Paradox helped a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feet on the\nground, I had another great feat to take on \u2013 1.5km hike with my equipment on back\nto the road. I had Radio contact with my Chase car but since he had no portable\nGPS device, we decided that it would be better for me to make it out there\nmyself and not risk getting him lost too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following\nmy GPS, I started walking with all my equipment \u2013 still around 50kg on my back.\nThat was a bad idea in +37\u00baC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stopped,\ndrank all my water. Took engine off my back, marked the spot on my GPS and\nheaded out with just wing, fuel bladder and all the electronics. Even then, it\ntook me over 2h from landing to reach the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then,\nafter cooling off under aircon and rehydrating myself I was back to the bushes,\nfollowing my GPS track and getting to my engine. Engine on my back and walking\nout again. It all took around 3.5h. Then we started the disassembly of the frame\nand loaded it on the car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time\nwe reachedthe first town with a motel and gas station, both had been closed for\nnight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz.jpg 650w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz-265x198.jpg 265w, https:\/\/ojovolador.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/lauri-record-lz-561x420.jpg 561w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of fuel and with no bed, we camped out in the car waiting for the gas station to open.  Having had\nbreakfast and refuelled, we were ready to head back home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p> It was an epic journey that I am happy that I managed to complete<\/p><cite>Lauri Kadakis<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>About the gear, the <strong>Zero Gravity engine<\/strong> is very reliable. I flew the same engine in the last FAI Endurance world cup without any problems. It has roughly same thrust that Vittorazi Moster has, but with better consumption and fewer problems. It\u2019s one of the few engines I trust to take on that type of flight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macpara.com\/en\/paragliders\/paramotor-gliders\/paradox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Mac Para Paradox (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\">Mac Para Paradox<\/a><\/strong> glider has a good balance between efficiency, speed and safety. That made it truly one of the best gliders for this flight. I have used Paradox 18 in competitions and successfully.
