Rob Whittall: “There is no better way to know that you are living than when you are right on the edge.”

A legend of flight, Robbie Whittall is one of the few pilots who has been a world champion both in paragliding and hang gliding, a regular on the podiums in the 90s, a test pilot, founder of the brand Ozone, and still active in the development of the brand's kitesurfing kites. After years away from competition, we met him at the 2024 El Yelmo Paragliding World Cup, where he told us what he's been up to these years and his views on the sport of paragliding.

“One of the nice things about coming back to the sport is, the first thing is the pilots are super friendly and it’s a joy to to come back in at such a high level and be able to fly with them and to have fun with a new group of people (…) But also equipment is amazing you know, these new gliders, the two liners. And you know I’m on a Zeno right now, I’ve flown an Enzo too, but they fill you with so much confidence(…) When I left it was dangerous to fly fast; now it really feels incredible to fly fast, you just push the bar, you have confidence, you fly with the back risers. It’s amazing”, explains the English pilot.

“I was out (of paragliding) for 20 years, 20 years of development have been very impressive and very good for the sport, because the sport is now safer, it’s faster, I think it’s more fun, (there’s) less pressure”, concludes Whittall.
