Imagine a place where mountains rise like sentinels, their ridges and valleys untouched by mass tourism. A place where thermals are strong, the landscapes breathtaking and the people as warm as the tropical sun. This place exists, and it is called Honduras.

Paragliding in Honduras: a hidden gem

For paraglider pilots, Honduras is a hidden gem: a land of endless opportunities for exploration, adventure and discovery. It is a place where the spirit of the great explorer can truly come alive. My recent flight in Honduras, which ended in a new national distance record of 117 km, was not just a personal achievement but a testament to the untapped potential of this incredible country.

A challenging paradise for paragliding

A land of unrivalled beauty and challenge, Honduras is any paraglider pilot’s dream. The terrain is a complex tapestry of valleys, plateaus and mountain ranges, offering a variety of flying conditions that will challenge even the most experienced pilots. The Villa de San Francisco valley, where my record flight began, is a perfect example.
Its thermals are strong and reliable, but the wind patterns are complex, demanding careful navigation and deep knowledge of the landscape.

Changing conditions

During my flight I met every kind of condition, from soft blue thermals to turbulent lee-side rotors. Each ridge and valley posed a new puzzle to solve, a new opportunity to test my skills. The pass between Cantarranas and Talanga, for example, offered an exciting challenge with its Venturi effect, while the Sulaco valley rewarded me with stunning views and constant lift.

Paragliding still has everything to develop here

But what makes Honduras truly special is how unexplored it is. Unlike other popular paragliding destinations, Honduras remains largely uncharted. That means every flight is a chance to discover new routes, new thermals and new landing fields. It is a place where you can truly be a pioneer, pushing the limits of what is possible in this sport.

The hospitality of the “Catrachos”

The people: a warm welcome awaits you. One of the most memorable aspects of my trip was the incredible hospitality of the Honduran people. After landing in a remote field in the village of Santa Rita de la Trinidad, in the department of Yoro, I was greeted with curiosity and kindness. A young man called Tulio, who spoke English, became my translator and guide. His family did everything they could to help me, offering me food, finding me a hotel room and even taking me to the nearest town to catch a bus.
Their generosity was moving. They refused any payment, simply saying: “You need help, and we help you because you need it, not for money.” This spirit of kindness and community is something I will never forget. It is a reminder that paragliding is not just about the flight, but about the connections we make with the people and places we meet along the way.

Why Honduras should be on every pilot’s radar

For paraglider pilots, Honduras offers a unique combination of challenge, beauty and opportunity. Here is why you should consider adding it to your list of places to fly:

  1. Untapped potential: with its diverse terrain and unexplored routes, Honduras is a paradise for adventurous pilots. Every flight is a chance to discover something new.
  2. Reliable conditions: between February and May, thermals are strong and consistent, making it an ideal destination for cross-country and distance flying.
  3. Affordable and accessible: compared with more popular paragliding destinations, Honduras is affordable and relatively easy to reach. Local pilots are friendly and keen to share their knowledge and learn from yours.
  4. Cultural richness: beyond flying, Honduras offers a rich cultural experience. From its vibrant villages to its warm, welcoming people, it is a place that will leave a lasting impression.
