The Bordairrace was born in Werfenweng in 2008, created by pilot Heli Eichholzer — a Red Bull X-Alps regular — who brought the concept of the Bavarian Crossalps to Austria. Almost two decades later, it still describes itself on its website as the only hike & fly competition in which every pilot decides their own route. The formula is simple on paper: all participants start at the same time and have 33 hours to get as far as possible from the start point — flying, walking or alternating both — and return within the time limit. There is no set course: each pilot decides in real time how far to push depending on the wind and terrain, which puts X-Alps pilots and first-timers on an equal footing at the start. In 2026 the calendar also awards points for the Austrian Hike & Fly Championship, with Overall, Women, Fun (B wings only), Tandem, Unsupported, Masters (50+) and Rookie categories.

The Aflenz event — the second of the 2026 Bordairrace — starts at the Aflenzer Bürgeralm, with the Hochschwab massif as a backdrop, one of the regular venues on the series calendar.

In this edition’s results, Kuterer won with an out-and-return distance of 65.23 km, adding up 105.38 km flown and 99.05 km walked. In his first Bordairrace, he won almost every category he was eligible for, ahead of more experienced pilots (Rookie, Fun, Unsupported and Austrian Championship). He was followed by Michal Radzicki, on an Ozone Zeolite 2 with 134.13 km in total, and Gerald Gold, on an Airdesign Hero XPed for the Soaring Club Hohe Wand team, with 116.44 km. On its official Instagram, the organisers summed up the event as a weekend of tension, tactics and top-level flying.
